Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a distressing disorder affecting up to 20 percent of the population at some point in their lives. The swelling that sometimes accompanies urticaria, called angioedema, can lead to swelling of the face, hands, and feet. The rash of urticaria is usually bumpy, red, and itchy. The bumps can be the size of mosquito bites to coin-size or larger, and can group together into irregular shapes. The rash will tend to come and go within a few hours, moving from one place on the body to another.
Angioedema, on the other hand, is usually not red or itchy, but tends to sting and burn, and can be described as "numbness". This swelling can be severe, and if it affects a person's ability to breathe, can be life-threatening.
Both urticaria and angioedema are a result of histamine and other chemicals released from mast cells in the skin and mucous membranes. This may occur through an allergic process or one in which mast cells release chemicals without IgE being involved.

Categories of Urticaria and Angioedema

Cases of urticaria and angioedema can be acute, lasting less than six weeks, or chronic, lasting more than 6 weeks. The length of symptoms can often be a clue as to the cause of the symptoms. For example, the most common cause of acute urticaria and angioedema in children is viral infections. Other common causes of acute symptoms include allergies (typically foods, medications, contact with animal dander, and insect stings and bites), stress, and infections such as the common cold and strep throat.
Unlike acute urticaria, only about 5-10 percent of chronic urticaria and angioedema is caused by allergies. Chronic cases are much more likely to be related to auto-immune causes than allergies. In the auto-immune form of urticaria and angioedema, a person makes antibodies against a component of their mast cells, triggering the release of histamine and causing symptoms.
Other forms of chronic urticaria include the physical urticarias, in which the rash is triggered by stimuli such as heat, cold, sunlight, pressure, and vibration. It is important to note that many forms of urticaria get worse with heat (such as from hot baths, exercise or wearing too much clothing) and pressure (such as around tight waistbands from clothing).
Lastly, some forms of urticaria and angioedema are related to other diseases, such as other auto-immune diseases (such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis), certain cancers, chronic infections such as viral hepatitis, and some hereditary forms.

How to Identify the Cause of Urticaria

In acute forms of urticaria and angioedema, a history of the events surrounding the outbreak is the most important information that can be obtained:

Was there a specific food eaten or medication taken within minutes to hours before the symptoms started?
Was the person stung or bitten by an insect shortly before the rash began?
Had the person been ill from an infection, or had more stress in their life recently?

Unless there is information suggesting a specific cause, performing allergy testing is not usually needed for acute urticaria. In chronic cases, a physician may check various blood and urine tests, and other procedures such as x-rays to look for other causes. If a physical urticaria is suspected, special tests to mimic the physical stimulus may be performed, such as placing an ice-cube on the skin to cause a hive to form in people with cold urticaria. It is important to note that in most cases of chronic urticaria and angioedema, a specific cause is never found, and is termed "idiopathic".

How Urticaria is Treated

The main treatment for urticaria is with anti-histamines. These are usually given in oral forms and may need to be given in large or frequent doses to control the symptoms. Short courses of corticosteroids may be needed. If the symptoms are severe, epinephrine shots can be used for immediate, but temporary, relief.
If the cause of the urticaria is known or suspected, such as a food or medication, avoidance of this trigger may resolve the symptoms. In cases of chronic idiopathic urticaria, triggers such as acute infections of any kind (such as the common cold), stress, and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin and ibuprofen, for example), may flare the symptoms.
In most cases of chronic urticaria and angioedema, symptoms last less than a few months to a few years. Some people may experience symptoms for many years, and those who do should be seen by an allergist for an appropriate testing and treatment.

Here is a tip to make it moist and add some flavor to it.
Slice up pieces of apple and put in a plastic bag or a container that you can seal it tight, add a few biscotti in and wait for a couple of days. The dried up biscotti will suck up the moisture from the apple and give it that apple flavor while making it moist as a brownie.

Calaveras Dam Replacement Project Update

Road Closure Update
We have received permission from Alameda County to temporarily close Calaveras Road south of Geary to the Alameda/ Santa Clara County Line for two separate periods
- The first two-month road closure, initially planned for fall 2011 is now planned for early 2012.
- The second road closure is expected in late 2012/early 2013 for a period of 18 months.
- Calaveras Road will remain open on weekends, but will be closed Monday-Friday during these periods.
- Access to the Sunol Wilderness will remain open
from the north at all times and from both the north and south on weekends.
- Emergency vehicles will have access to the road at all times.
- The roads will be swept clean of debris prior to weekend openings.

Calaveras Dam – Controlled Detonation
The contractor will be using controlled detonation to produce the hard rock required for construction of the dam. To excavate the foundation of the dam, we may encounter rock that is too hard for our machinery, in which case we may also use controlled detonation. You should make it there at first light (around 5:45 - 6:00 a.m. DST). During low tide is best from 5:30 - 11:00 for the smelt and mackerel. Crabbing should be good mid morning on.
The way you get there is to go up highway 101 north, to the golden gate bridge and exit Alexander Drive (first exit past the vista point). Make a right on Alexander drive, then first left on Danes Drive , then first right on Bunker Road . Go all the way down the hill to the stop sign. Make a right at the stop sign and you'll see the coast guard boats and pier.
Bring regular market shrimp, anything sized 50-60 and smaller. You'll also need floats/bobbers, size 6 hooks (3 on a line) and a two ounce weight.

Total mileage is 109km with about 2000 meters of climbing.
Using the Nag on this ride was a mistake and I kept on wishing on the carbon Calfee or the Spectrum Ti since those two have more gears to tackle the Bay Area hills plus they are lighter than the Nag. With all that climbing, I was struggling on those inclines but the downhill part was sweet. Maximum speed was 42.6 on twitchy Apline and Kings Mountain.

The disorder may be inherited or caused by other factors such as birth-related or other physical trauma, infection, poisoning (e.g. lead poisoning) or reaction to drugs.

It would have been a disaster if the fire was able to jump over the rooftops. The heat from the fire was so intense it melted all the plastic bins between the two structures. I tried spraying my garage roof with the garden hose but there were explosions coming from the fire I have to run out plus the cop was saying the little pops might be something else he didn't want me to go near my house.

The fire did not even touch the car on the left but the heat was so intense it melted the front of the car and its interior. So much damage to my neighbors house but luckily no one was seriously hurt.

Newest addition to the stable is a Softride Classic but it needs a lot of tweaking. I will be in the hunt for a new fork and threadless headset plus maybe a set of aero 650c's.

Updated 12/05/2008 with Chris King headset and an unknown aero fork badged as a Softride plus a pair of old Specialized tri-spokes. The 56/39 rings are not compatible, it keeps on dropping the chain every time I shift the front gear. Changed the inner ring to a 42 and it works flawlessly. Those 17tooth drop really does not work well.

The plan was to ride this new setup for about 10 miles to shake out the bugs but the weather was nice plus the fit was good so I was really able to generate enough speed to make the initial ride into a 53 miler comfortably. It is a keeper..........

1996 Lemond Zurich - It rides right and feels right but it doesn't look right with only about 3 inches of post showing when I set it up for me. So... I got 4 windows and a pair of 2008 Fulcrum Racing Zero for it. Not too bad.

Now this one was too flexy at the BB. Imagine an all out of the saddle sprint and the darn thing decides to change gears. I found out about the flex when I mounted it on a trainer and it scared the heck out of me when I looked down at the BB while running a 53x12 gear. The BB was swaying about 2 inches on each side, that's about 4 inches of play. No wonder it changes its gears when stomped on. Sold to a triathlete which I think the frame was originally designed for. 'ya know, the aero thang!!!

Another one of those batillog can't clear the top tube thing even with 26 inch wheels. The truth is I can't reach the pedals at the bottom stroke even at the lowest setting of the saddle. I thought I would be able to tweak it by moving the eccentric BB but no dice.

My old and reliable workhorse that transformed so many times but now its starting to settle down. The last pieces would be a Ti seatpost with setback and a gray/silver Fizik Aliante. A set of 7800 Dura Ace derailleurs and calipers would be nice too.

With its 7700 derailleurs, 7410 cranks and 7800 rings, it still works flawlessly.

Congrats to the winners as well as the finishers of Sunday’s Siclista Weekend Warrior Challenge. The stimulating route originates in Newark Java to the infamous Old La Honda (OLH) ascent, then back to the point of origin. Here is the synopsis.

At 8a.m., the enthusiasts rolled at a conversational pace. It was peaceful until four ambitious bunch breakaway as they approach the turbulence plagued Dumbarton Bridge (DB). On one hand, Jack precariously heads the leaders. On the other hand, the peloton maintains its complacency. There is strength in numbers. Thus, the peloton can easily reel the leaders in and swallow them alive. This group is confident that the attack was too early. Shortly thereafter just a few miles after the DB descent, sure enough the quartet was caught.

Rodge distresses the peaceful peloton. He sets a gutsy pace to grab the first Green Jersey at the Arastradero’s final hump. Grinding a very heavy gear, he demolishes anyone who tried to outpace him. Unfortunately, he calls it a day leaving no chance to defend his title. A word of caution, they are ought to test you again next time around.

They are now in Portola Loop. Jack attacks again. This guy is so aggressive; he redlines his heart rate every effort he takes. Organizers scrambles for an award dedicated to him. He initiates the Red Jersey—the most aggressive rider.

Spencer, the newly-wed, is not his day. Every time he attempts to cover attacks or endeavors a sprint, his chain drops. He blames his prodigal brother, Jr., for tampering the precise adjustment of his rig.

A hard left to OLH, the peloton scales the biggest ascent of the day. A rider with a noticeable climbing prowess is no other than Jerry, the other half of Nancy, wins the Polka Dot Jersey. The Maharlikan spins his way up OLH. He is the first one to crest. To celebrate, this victorious mountain goat even turns around at the summit and descends to check on laggers.

I call him the luckiest man alive because his significant other rides bike with him. Of course, Nancy receives the Pink Jersey. She withstands any male pedal power to this day. Indeed, she outperforms most of the guys on flats and climbs.

The rest of the leg is the rolling Skyline Boulevard down to eerie 84 East then back track to Newark. I enjoy this descent, so I lead. I catch three slow moving motorcyclists. I pass all of them and became their rabbit. I carve the hairpin turns and sprint straight-aways. I hear their engine roar and so I push some more. Man, that is exhilarating.

On our way home, we face a hurdle: the turbulent DB. This time it is cross and head wind. However, it did not stop Jack and John M, the Red Jersey and White Jersey (best young rider) laureates accordingly. On the other side, it was flat but still experiencing violent winds. It was Jack and John M head-to-head to the finish. However, Gonzalo, another Green Jersey victor, snags their aspirations.

Special thanks to Roy, Romy, Tony Fuji and Tony Madone for pulling the peloton together to work as a single unit.

Folks, this is just a precursor to a more challenging ride ahead. I will post the details of Spencer’s Potluck Road Ride soon. Backed by popular demand, the route is Stevens Canyon, Redwood Gulch, Hwy 9, Skyline Blvd, Pagemill, Foothill, Stevens Canyon, Celebrate Spencer’s wedding.

LOS ANGELES - Larry Harmon, who turned the character Bozo the Clown into a show business staple that delighted children for more than a half-century, died Thursday of congestive heart failure. He was 83.

His publicist, Jerry Digney, told The Associated Press he died at his home.

Although not the original Bozo, Harmon portrayed the popular clown in countless appearances and, as an entrepreneur, he licensed the character to others, particularly dozens of television stations around the country. The stations in turn hired actors to be their local Bozos.

"You might say, in a way, I was cloning BTC (Bozo the Clown) before anybody else out there got around to cloning DNA," Harmon told the AP in a 1996 interview.

"Bozo is a combination of the wonderful wisdom of the adult and the childlike ways in all of us," Harmon said.

Pinto Colvig, who also provided the voice for Walt Disney's Goofy, originated Bozo the Clown when Capitol Records introduced a series of children's records in 1946. Harmon would later meet his alter ego while answering a casting call to make personal appearances as a clown to promote the records.

He got that job and eventually bought the rights to Bozo. Along the way, he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume.

"I felt if I could plant my size 83AAA shoes on this planet, (people) would never be able to forget those footprints," he said.

Susan Harmon, his wife of 29 years, indicated Harmon was the perfect fit for Bozo.

"He was the most optimistic man I ever met. He always saw a bright side; he always had something good to say about everybody. He was the love of my life," she said Thursday.

The business — combining animation, licensing of the character, and personal appearances — made millions, as Harmon trained more than 200 Bozos over the years to represent him in local markets.

"I'm looking for that sparkle in the eyes, that emotion, feeling, directness, warmth. That is so important," he said of his criteria for becoming a Bozo.

The Chicago version of Bozo ran on WGN-TV in Chicago for 40 years and was seen in many other cities after cable television transformed WGN into a superstation.

Bozo — portrayed in Chicago for many years by Bob Bell — was so popular that the waiting list for tickets to a TV show eventually stretched to a decade, prompting the station to stop taking reservations for 10 years. On the day in 1990 when WGN started taking reservations again, it took just five hours to book the show for five more years. The phone company reported more than 27 million phone call attempts had been made.

By the time the show bowed out in Chicago, in 2001, it was the last locally produced version. Harmon said at the time that he hoped to develop a new cable or network show, as well as a Bozo feature film.

He became caught up in a minor controversy in 2004 when the International Clown Hall of Fame in Milwaukee took down a plaque honoring him as Bozo and formally endorsed Colvig for creating the role. Harmon denied ever misrepresenting Bozo's history.

He said he was claiming credit only for what he added to the character — "What I sound like, what I look like, what I walk like" — and what he did to popularize Bozo.

"Isn't it a shame the credit that was given to me for the work I have done, they arbitrarily take it down, like I didn't do anything for the last 52 years," he told the AP at the time.

Harmon protected Bozo's reputation with a vengeance, while embracing those who poked good-natured fun at the clown.

As Bozo's influence spread through popular culture, his very name became a synonym for clownish behavior.

"It takes a lot of effort and energy to keep a character that old fresh so kids today still know about him and want to buy the products," Karen Raugust, executive editor of The Licensing Letter, a New York-based trade publication, said in 1996.

A normal character runs its course in three to five years, Raugust said. "Harmon's is a classic character. It's been around 50 years."

On New Year's Day 1996, Harmon dressed up as Bozo for the first time in 10 years, appearing in the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

The crowd reaction, he recalled, "was deafening."

"They kept yelling, `Bozo, Bozo, love you, love you.' I shed more crocodile tears for five miles in four hours than I realized I had," he said. "I still get goose bumps."

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Harmon became interested in theater while studying at the University of Southern California.

"Bozo is a star, an entertainer, bigger than life," Harmon once said. "People see him as Mr. Bozo, somebody you can relate to, touch and laugh with."

Besides his wife, Harmon is survived by his son, Jeff Harmon, and daughters Lori Harmon, Marci Breth-Carabet and Leslie Breth.

Although I haven't been riding consistently, I felt good riding the 50 miler. The Schwinn Paramount is a bit heavy but I guess the fit was dead on that it didn't matter on those rollers. The aero profile of the Dura Ace AX handle bar helped too on those long flat stretches. My hand position was perfect on the drops due to the outward flare of the drop bar that I figured I'll start hunting for that feature on drop bars. A custom bar is probably my best bet if I can find a builder that does custom handle bars. I've tried bending drop bars before when I was young, s!@#$%^ and didn't have much care for the world that got me a lot of missing skin when those darn bars break. :) :) :)

After his individual time trial 4th place finish, Levi Liepheimer dons team Astana's white long-sleeve jersey. Thereafter, he rolls toward my direction. As he closes to about 4 feet, news reporters halt him for an interview. There I am caught in the middle of a media frenzy. Around me, I see reporters & camera men alike with their dangling "Tour of Amgen media passes."

As they pursue with their interrogation, snap shots with their foot-long, lensed S.L.R. & aim with their sophisticated video cams, I face a dilema. I am perplexed whether to dash out to the curbside where I belong as a spectator or hold my ground and blend in with the newscasters. I opt for the latter. Dwarfed by its gigantic counterparts, I unzip my miniature Cannon Power Shot from its protective pouch. Momentarily, I aim from its built-in liquid crystal display & start clicking.

I tried building this bike with full Shimano Dura Ace AX gruppo but I was limiting the build to 6 speeds only since the AX group is an indexed 6 speed and no matter how good your friction shifting is, the rear deraileur would index into one of those 6 grooves of the RD. Since this is a 1988 Paramount with Shimano dropouts, I decided to go with Dura Ace 7410 stuff. Although the 8 speed DA was officially released in 1989, prototypes of the DA 8 were used in the 1988 Giro D'Italia. The highlight of this project is probably the rare SP-7410 black Dura Ace seatpost and the Dura Ace handlebar.
Black Paramounts with gold plated forks are 1 of the 500 limited edition from the 1400 that were made for the Anniversary year. There are red ones too from the 500.

The weather was warm and we decided to go for a quick spin at the Coyote Hills Regional Park. The little guy was so excited going around Coyote hill pointing at almost everything that moves, but when we turned towards the open space where Alameda Creek meets the bay, he keeps on mumbling, "I am bored". So, we headed back to the Visitor Center where we took a quick see/look/watch tour of the museum.
We had a blast looking at the educational displays and exhibits as well as the Possum's Pocket Nature Store. The exhibits portray the Ohlone way of life, and includes a tee-pee and a tule reed boat constructed by park staff and volunteers using Native American methods. Other exhibits cover the park’s natural history and wildlife.
On our way back to the parking lot, the little guy was again too excited that he keeps on getting off the saddle and then dance on the pedals saying, "this is how Lance does it".
A nice outing of the family on a triplet for the day.
